Gradation of the adjectives / Stopniowanie przymiotników
Adjectives can name the qualities in various levels of gradation (stopniowanie): such as it is hot, but yesterday it was hotter. Yet, tomorrow is supposed to be the hottest day.
As in the example there are three levels of the gradation, the so called “równy stopień” (the first level, the adjective’s main form), “wyższy” (higher) and “najwyższy” (the highest) levels. In Polish language (just like in English) you have two ways of making the gradation - Simple and Descriptive Ways (stopniowanie proste i opisowe). |
|
Stopniowanie proste:
I level: adjective II level: adjective + -szy ending III level: naj- + II level Wysoki – wyższy – najwyższy Wesoły – weselszy – najweselszy (Note: there are many changes in the stem of adjectives in the II level, you will have to pay attention to this changes, try to remember them) |
Stopniowanie opisowe
(for adjective which are abstract, longer and of foreign origins): I stopień: adjective II stopień: bardziej + adjective III stopień: najbardziej + adjective Interesujący - bardziej interesujący - najbardziej interesujący skomplikowany - bardziej skomplikowany - najbardziej skomplikowany |
